We stopped and played a quick game of konane, the Hawaiian equivalent of checkers. Played with bits of lava and coral pieces on this lava tablet with equally spaced recesses, it is remarkably relaxing. Add the lovely sounds of the palms swaying to the trade winds, and the fresh scent of the pandanus and the ocean, and it's a perfect way to enjoy the afternoon after exploring the rest of the City of Refuge's numerous historic sites. |
