“Belly Dance & Beyond” Theatre Performance

KANEOHE , HAWAII – Amara Kismet Near & Middle East Dance Ensembleâ presents its premier theatrical production "Belly Dance & Beyond" at the Paliku Theatre in Kaneohe , Hawaii on Saturday, June 4, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.   An 80-strong cast includes males and females, children and adults, presenting a cultural pageantry of music and dance from around the globe.

What is belly dancing?  Where is the origin of belly dance?  Who are belly dancers?  When did Near & Middle Eastern dance evolve into the art form we have come to know today?  Where will it go in the future?  How does this style of dancing fit into the international dance scene?

"Belly Dance & Beyond" responds to these and many other questions about the mysterious and richly entwined Near & Middle Eastern cultures through the eyes of a unique group of individuals who have taken these cultural studies to a new level.  Bridging gender and generation gaps, this production guarantees an evening of drama and elegance, as a tapestry of travel is woven along an historic timeline through multiple cultures - peering into the daily lives of Egyptians, Lebanese, Tunisians, Turks, Greeks, and more.  This show promises something for everyone, as Hawaiian, Tahitian, Latin, Scandinavian, and many other cultures are also embraced and showcased – providing a "treasure chest of jewels" for those who truly appreciate quality music and dance.

This production is under the artistic direction of "Shamira" Beauregard-Axelson, who has more than 35 years of experience in cultural studies and performances around the globe.  Amara Kismet Near & Middle East Dance Ensembleâ provides an educational experience for the public and private sectors, in understanding and celebrating cultural similarities and differences of the Near & Middle East, through outreach programs.
